The 1943 U.S. Navy CPO Shirt – A classic shirt for the outdoors
Life on deck can be rough sometimes. Therefore deck wear had to meet special needs. Over the decades certain materials and fits have evolved in the seafaring. One piece of garment that has evolved is the CPO Shirt of the U.S. Navy. The roomy construction together with two large chest pockets meet every petty officers needs on deck. Originally developed in the 1930s it is still in service today with some slight changes. We stuck to an old pattern from 1940.
This version of the CPO Shirt is made of moleskin, also called „english leather“, which is made of heavy one sided brushed cotton sateen. Moleskin is typical fabric used in workwear, since it is very durable. The warp is usaually made of twisted heavy yarn, while the weft is made of a softer yarn. After weaving the left side of the fabric is brushed, giving it a soft touch, reminiscent of suede. The Moleskin fabric is still produced in a traditional German weaving company.
